History Milestones
In 1960 the State Chemistry Committee of the USSR Cabinet of Ministers sanctioned the construction of a plant of phosphorous mineral fertilizers and deflouriated phosphates in Gomel. The plant’s construction was started in 1963. On December 27, 1965, the plant’s first production line was launched, consisting of sulfuric acid shop, the plant’s central laboratory and the auxiliary facilities. In a few years’ time facilities producing double granulated superphosphate, extracted phosphoric acid, as well as fluorides and nepheline fire retardants shops, were introduced. In 1970 facilities producing composite saturated fertilizers were put into operation ahead of the schedule. In 1974 a complex of shops was launched, including granulated ammophos shop, phosphoric acid shop (employing domestic equipment) and fluorides shop.
In 1978 Gomel’s chemists mastered the experimental production of sodium sulfite. They were the first in USSR to produce sodium sulfite using a new continuous production technique – the so-called «wet method».

JSC «Gomel Chemical Plant» today
These days, JSC «Gomel Chemical Plant» operates in accordance with the 2006 – 2010 Development Program. It is essentially a complex of measures to be taken in order to implement new and modernized production facilities equipped with up-to-date means of entrapping the contaminating substances that are emitted into the atmosphere, sewage cleansing and waste disposal. With regards to the future, the plant has set a straight course to continue the reconstruction of the production facilities up to the level of satisfying the domestic demand and preserving the declared amounts of exports to foreign markets. In order to achieve the set tasks, the Plant intends to augment capital investments in the principal production facilities at a growing rate and raise the general level of production to meet the demands of the global market.
In 2008 the object «Equipment modernization in SAS-2» was put into operation, which resulted in replacing the main equipment in order to stabilize the shop’s functioning, raise the energetic efficiency factor of the sulfuric acid apparatus and to upgrade the basic production assets. Work on the project of “Reconstruction of the Sulfuric Acid Shop with an increase in its capability up to a rate of 230 000 tons of 100%-Р2О5 a year” is being carried out, similar work is being carried out for the reconstruction of the Granulated Ammophos Shop, the Complex-Composite Mineral Fertilizers Shop and the Double Superphosphate Shop.
Thanks to the development and implementation of technologies and new products, the Plant’s exports in 2009 counted 143 % of the same figure in 2008.
The Plant delivers its products to the markets of Russia, the CIS countries, Eastern Europe, Baltic states.
The largest importers are: Ukraine, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Romania, Czech Republic, Moldova, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, etc.
The Company’s sales policy is formulated with regards to the simultaneous development of the existing market and the search for new ones.
For instance, in 2009 the Company’s new markets were such states as Georgia, Italy, Austria, Germany and Serbia.
At the same time with the Plant’s development, its staff strives constantly to enhance the products’ quality; steps are taken every year to upgrade its consumer properties. 2006, for example, saw the certification of the Quality Management System (QMS) for the production of anhydrous sodium sulfite and nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium complex fertilizers in accordance with STB ISO 9001-2001; a re-certification of this QMS in the National System of Correspondence Confirmation is planned in the near future.
In 2008 JSC «Gomel Chemical Plant» certified the QMS for the production of NPK-fertilizers for its correspondence to ISO 9001, labour protection management system for correspondence to OHSAS 18001 and the environment management system for correspondence to ISO 14001.
In 2009 the range of application of the QMS was broadened to cover the production of all the mineral fertilizers.
